The Wrock Wreview: Bathroom Acoustics

The Album

Released on the first of January in 2009, The Moaning Myrtles came out with Bathroom Acoustics. All of these sounds are either voices or things you’d find in a bathroom. For those of you unfamiliar with this band, The Moaning Myrtles have songs from the perspective of everyone’s favorite Hogwarts bathroom ghost, and the two members of the band are Lauren Fairweather and Nina Jankowicz. Let’s go to… the bathroom???

The Tracks

The title of the album, Bathroom Acoustics has incredible melodies, harmonies, and sound effects. It reminds me of the Phineas and Ferb song, Funky Rhythms in the Bathroom. I happen to like The Moaning Myrtles’ song better. It’s clever, funny, and works so well.

Lonely Myrtle is a sad song that begins with a gorgeous a cappella background. The lyrics tell of how Myrtle was not invited to Nearly-Headless Nick’s deathday party. I love the words of the chorus, and how the chords change in a way that you don’t expect. It’s such a great song.

Do I sing Glasses whenever I get a new pair of glasses? Yes. Am I a huge nerd? Also yes.

Kill Me Again is an absolute bop that doubles as a thirst trap for Tom Riddle. (What even was that sentence?) Myrtle raps about how hot Tom is, and asks if he can kill her again. Tom responds to Myrtle to tell her that she’s not the one for him. This song is so funny and so good.

As Ravenclaw, I totally get Myrtle’s frustrations in O.W.L.s. Just because she’s a ghost, they won’t let her take her O.W.L.s – how horrible! The background vocals are incredible, and the end of the song always impresses me. They put both verses together at once to create a magical piece of musical art.

In Summary

I am a long time Moaning Myrtles fan and I absolutely loved getting to review this album. It’s one of my favorite wrock albums of all time and it still holds up after all these years. I’m excited to get these songs stuck in my head again. Their musicality, a cappella style, and lyrics all come together as a cohesive unit of beautiful melody. Give it a listen, and see if it sounds better in the bathroom!
