The Wrock Wreview: We Had Class

The Album

Today I have the ultimate pleasure to review We Had Class by one of the classic wizard rockers, Gred and Forge. This is a limited edition EP by Gred and Forge, telling the story of what they thought of their Hogwarts classes. Originally released sometime in May 2008, this version comes with a secret bonus track! It was rereleased on November 5, 2021. Time to go to class!

The Tracks

First up is Divination. It begins with a sick electric guitar solo and dives right into a classic Gred and Forge vibe. Fred and George think that Trelawney would make a better janitor. To be fair, she probably shouldn’t be drinking on the job. I love the rhyming structure in this song. It’s upbeat and catchy, like all of Gred and Forge’s music. There’s a great tongue-rolling part near the end of the song that had me cracking up.

Let’s head to the next class, Care of Magical Creatures! Unfortunately, Professor Grubbly-Plank has taken over for Hagrid while he’s away. Even more unfortunately, she doesn’t seem to like boys; this causes a problem for the Weasley twins. It’s another high-tempo, high-energy song with a rockin’ guitar solo in the second half.

What do the twins think of Arithmancy? We slow the tempo down a bit to explore the topic with a psychedelia musicality. Spoiler alert: they hate it. It seems too complicated for them. The lyrics are hilarious and had me laughing.

Charms is up next. Fred and George sing a funky tune to thank Flitwick for all that he has taught them. I love the funky beat in this song, and the idea that the twins got into all sorts of trouble because of the charms they learned from Flitwick’s class.

Time to head to History of Magic. Instead of learning about magical history, the twins speculate on how the ghostly professor died. That’s all they want to know. This song is so hype and had me head banging. I love the instrumentals and the tight vocals.

Apparition is last, and only seventeen seconds long. It’s a fun little ditty with a pop! at the end.

In Summary

As always, Gred and Forge delivered the hype for this album. I loved taking a musical journey with the twins on their way to each class to see what they thought about the subject and the teacher. It was a fun ride, and now I’m going to wonder about how Professor Binns really died.
