Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jam: March 2021

A "Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Jams" sweets label with red and white stripes and the text on a yellow scroll.

Welcome to another month of Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jam! Before we dive in, an announcement: Grace Kendall is stepping down from running the Jam to focus on their many other awesome projects, and I (Zoe Bentley of Dots and Lines) will be taking over.

Grace has done an amazing job at inspiring us to be creative these last seven months, challenging us to make any sort of art by providing a new theme each month to get the ideas going. I will do my best to keep up the fun! This month’s theme will be at the end of this post.

Now, let the games begin! February’s theme was games, and three different artists each had their own way to play with that.

I was inspired by TK’s haiku for the previous month, so I wrote a haiku about a little family scene:

Summer afternoons
A Prince legacy passed down
Gobstones champions

Next, TK of Totally Knuts revealed the lyrics to a song called “When Marnie Was There” from a Stardew Valley album they’re making with their partner. From the looks of it, it’s going to be a real treat for Stardew Valley fans!

Chorus:
I remember when Marnie was there
Standing behind the counter
All of the animals under her care
There’s just something about her

Verse 1
I went on a Tuesday
To buy some hay and cows
But Marnie was at Pierre’s store
For the weekly workout
I thought she’d be there Wednesday
But to my surprise
She was taking that day off
From selling me supplies

Chorus

Verse 2
Thinking that a Thursday
Might be better yet
I hoped that she was open
That she didn’t forget
That Robin built a barn for me
In which I could put sheep
But Marnie wasn’t there again
I’m starting to lose sleep

Chorus

Verse 3
I dragged myself through Friday
Bought myself a phone
I got Marnie’s answering machine
Saying she wasn’t home
I lost heart on Friday
And then the weekend came
When I saw she wasn’t there
I caved in and asked Shane

Chorus

Finally, Mermanda of Muggle Snuggle and First Person SINGular released a song titled “A Game of Cat and Witch” on her new Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jams EP. That’s right, Mermanda has an EP of the songs she made for these Jams! “A Game of Cat and Witch” follows a witch who’s particular about her pastimes. It makes me want to try flying in the rain!

Thanks to everyone who played along! If you’re still working on something for February or earlier, don’t worry. You can still share your work in the comments at any time.

We’re fast approaching a change in seasons, so we’re going to have a March theme to match: “growth.” Interpret this however you like, whether that’s singing about your favorite moment of character growth, sketching the contents of a Hogwarts greenhouse, examining your own personal growth or growth as an artist, or anything else! All ideas are welcome.

    Keeping with my haiku theme…

    Devil’s Snare hugs me
    And I usually like hugs
    But not from this plant

Haha y’all…I don’t know why the theme made me think of this, but I was randomly struck by inspiration this morning & banged out a demo for this ridiculous little song. I hope that I am able to record it properly at some point heehee https://candlewix.bandcamp.com/album/fenrir-greybacks-happy-song-demo

Mermanda hasn’t commented about her submission yet: https://mermanda.bandcamp.com/track/growth-herbology-lesson

I wanted to make sure that you see it before the month is up, Zoe!
