Question Tuesday

Last week, we saw that most people have more Muggle music than wizard rock music, so that got me thinking about how my Muggle music differs from the wrock I listen to. My Muggle friend helped me to pinpoint exactly what I should ask of you regarding this:

What Muggle band would you love to see make an album devoted to wrock?

It took a little thinking on my part to answer this, so feel free to mull it over a bit.
I would say there are two bands for me:

Aesop Rock, because his lyrics are genius, and I would love to see what he did with the wrock angle.
Megadeth, because I don’t think there is enough wizard metal out there.

Well to start, I’ll mention a non-wizard rock band who does an awesome song about HP. They’re called Tenant (www.myspace.com/tenantband) and are from Canada. The song’s called “Lament For Albus” and it’s freaking awesome. Also Saves the Day’s Chris Conley did a song about HP for a video blog a while back when they were in the studio.

Oh and I almost forgot. New Found Glory’s alterego’s The International Superheroes of Hardcore released a 7″ called “HPxHC” (Harry Potter’s Hardcore) and it was released on four different color vinyls, one for each Hogwarts House. Genius.

    So who should:
Thrice: Because it would be freaking beautiful and crushing at the same time.

Flight of the Conchords: I’m fairly sure they’d write the funnest one out there. I mean their song “Frodo, Don’t Wear The Ring” song is brilliant as it is, so they could easily transfer to HP.

Coheed and Cambria: I’d like them to, after they finish their own story, release an album for each book. That would pretty much make me love them more.

Paul Baribeau & Kimya Dawson: They’ve collaborated before, so they should now do an entire album of folky wrocky goodness.

I think Within Temptation would make the most beautiful wrock CD ever, Sharon’s voice is so gorgeous! On that note, Evanescense would also be amazing on a wrock CD! Also, bands like Muse or Death Cab for Cutie would be awesome. But if muggle bands started making wrock, it would all become too commercial!

I would have to say the Arctic Monkeys, cause they rock so hard anyway.

The Decemberists! They were pretty much my gateway band into wizard rock as it is, with their literate, sometimes fantastical storytelling aesthetic. Who else writes songs about diabolical revenge carried out in the belly of a whale, which end in a climactic harpsichord crescendo? And who else uses words like “cormorants”, “arabesques”, and “parallax”? In the same song?

All you’d have to do would be to change Victorian England into Hogwarts, pirates/naval cavalry/general sailors into wizards, and write about the Founders or the war against Voldemort instead of, for example, the infertile queen of a desert empire or the Siege of Leningrad. Plus, in keeping with one of their more random (but most awesome) trends, I’m sure they’d write a wonderful song about Albus and Grindewald.

Ludo would probably make something epic out of wizard rock. I actually wouldn’t put it past them to write a song about HP if they ever got the inspiration.

There’s a band out of Philly called the Extraordinaires. They’re one of my favorite bands, and I think their sense of humor lends itself really well to Wizard Rock.

And OF COURSE…I think Bruce Springsteen could make the most epic story-song of all time out of the Battle of Hogwarts. I get chills just thinking about that.

My favorite band is called Ash. They are from across the pond. I would love to hear a Potter inspired song by them. A take on the battle of Hogwarts in the style of Twilight of the Innocents perhaps.

My first love is Hanson, so I’d generally love to see some wizard rock by them, with certain songs they’ve written like An Evening At The Big Top, which is almost story like itself, I believe they could pull wizardrock off. It would be even more awesome for me, as basically all I listen to right now is Hanson or Wizardrock.

  9. Russ Avatar

    Between The Buried And Me.

That would be the most technical, brutal wizardcore album ever.

Also, Alestorm. But in the same style they play in now. Pirate wizard metal. You can’t beat that.

    Unless you add in ninjas.

    Weird Al.

    For reals.

  11. Laura Avatar

A Radiohead wrock album would be awesome.

  12. Steph Avatar

    Oh, I forgot: The Who.

Pete Townshend could write one incredible rock opera about HP. I can only imagine what kind of stuff could come out of that…

  13. Freya Avatar

@Andrew: I’m fairly certain my Muggle friend was thinking of The Decemberists when he thought of this question.

@Steph: Funny you should say that – I’ve searched for “Wizard Rock” in places and definitely gotten ‘Tommy’ results.

  14. Danny Avatar

@Russ: Dude BTBAM would create the most brutal wrock album ever. I now want this more than anything.

@Freya, I wasn’t. Why did you think that?

  16. Marisha Granger Avatar

That is hard. I’ve only listen to wrock music. No muggle music here.

@Steph: I was going to suggest Ludo! They are hilarious and awesome.

  18. Freya Avatar

@Her Muggle Friend: Hmm, guess I had that conversation about The Decemberists being book rock-ish with someone else.

@all: I hope you are checking out some of the artists that people are recommending because a lot of them are awesome! Thanks for the musical library expansion, everyone.

I would LOVE to see Relient K make a wrock song, or (more preferrable) album. That would be the ultimate combination of my two greatest music loves. Relient K is pretty witty and their older stuff is so fun and creative (and a little random), it would be perfect.

Also, although I’m not really a huge fan of either one, I feel like someone like Kanye or Akon could make something really clever and catchy.

  20. Liane Avatar

    RADIOHEAD!!

And also, the Spice Girls. We need something like that.

  21. Courtney Avatar

Weezer would do an awesome job, also I’m pretty sure Rivers Cuomo at least is already an HP fan.

AFI and/or 30 Minutes to Mars would be perfect for the angstier storylines/books – and the videos! I can just imagine.

SJ Tucker would be perfect in a lot of different ways, and she already does a lot of Peter Pan-themed stuff with one of her projects.

There was someone else that I was just thinking of that I forgot – I may be back!

  22. Courtney Avatar

I remembered! Over the Rhine and Ellery. Both are fantastic and tell stories with their songs, both lyrically and musically. Oh, so beautiful.

I agree with Steph that a Springsteen song about the battle of Hogwarts would be amazingly epic and it also gives me chills just thinking about it.

Hm, other muggle bands…. I’ve been listening to wizard rock pretty exclusively lately, so it’s hard to say… I think They Might Be Giants would also be a natural choice for a Muggle/Wizard Rock crossover album. Personally, I’d like it if Jakob Dylan did a wrock album just because I love listening to him sing, but I think I’m the only one there.

I’d also like to find out what country wrock might sound like, though I don’t know that many country bands, outside of the Dixie Chicks and Carrie Underwood.

  24. Laura Avatar

@Alana: I love Relient K too. There early stuff especially :). Am I the only one who thinks of Fred and George on Sadie Hawkins Dance?

  25. Orlina Avatar

Right now I’m imagining just how awesome Wrock would be if it was done by Paramore or/and by The Blind Guardian.
Two different kind of music, but wow that would be something!!!

COLDPLAY COLDPLAY COLDPLAY!!! Quite frankly, Im surprised this band hasn’t already come up. They are my favuorite band EVER!

    1) They are British, and I’m sure Jo Rowling would like that.
    2) “Viva La Vida” is an awesome album, with a lot of strings use. So they already know how to create epic masterpieces.
    3) Jo Rowling likes Coldplay.
    4) Their lyrics are already very visual, poetic and dynamic, and they could be really expressive about the world of Harry Potter.
    5) The guys in the band seem really nice.
    6) Their videos are epic, so they could create one heck of an awesome video for a wizard rock song. They also have great cover art.
    7) They have written a lot of anti-war songs on “Viva La Vida”, and already have songs that sound mysterious and very British. Example: “Cemetaries of London.” – almost has a Riddle graveyard feel to it.
    8) Their sound is very full and rich and dynamic.
    9) They care a lot about their fans, and I’m sure they would be pleased to find such a following for wizard rock.
    10) I already draw a lot of Harry Potter parallels in their existing songs. They are JUST PLAIN AWESOME!!!

There you go, 10 solid reasons why it should be them. If I had to choose an American band, it would be Death Cab For Cutie.

  27. Scott Humdinger Avatar

    I’m with Jarrod, Weird Al.

The Australian band, Tripod could certainly do something equally amusing.

Also, the actors who played Tonks, Cedric Diggory, and Colin Creevy in the movies are all musicians/songwriters. I’d love to hear their contributions.

  28. Nora Avatar

    Vampire Weekend.

  29. Jace Avatar

I’ll match you with BTBAM, Weezer and Coldplay.

    and raise you the Shins

  30. IFTBA Avatar

    They Might Be Giants, obviously.

You might as well as who WOULDN’T you want to see make a wrock album.

  31. Russ Avatar

    Wouldn’t?

Pat Boone, Nickelback, the ’86 Chicago Bears.

  32. Freya Avatar

    @Russ: Eek! Yes, agreed.

I’d have to add Hall and Oates and Asia to that list as well.

  33. Zivlok Avatar
    Zivlok

They Might Be Giants and Fishboy. HatP’s 2007 EP sounded so much like what would happen if TMBG and Fishboy teamed up to make a wizard rock album, and I’d love to hear it happen for reals.

I realise that this is the Tuesday after, but aahh well.
Snow Patrol would be great! They write beautiful stuff, along with Keane, The Fray, Coldplay…

On the funny side, omg Flight of the Conchords for sure! Tenacious-D would be beyond supreme, also.

Biffy Clyro is my favourite band of all time, so I would have to say them too. Mon the Biff!

  35. Ashley Avatar
    Ashley

omg great suggestions all through here. In total agreement with Tripod, Weird Al, Within Temptation, Evanescence, Coldplay, Tenacious D, and the actor who plays Tonks, though probabl the other two actors mentioned too even if I heard said music or even know they were musicians.

To a lesser extent, I’d agree with AFI, 30 Seconds to Mars, Keane, The Fray, Nickelback, Radiohead and Reliant K.

I certainly haven’t heard of Flight of the Concorde or They Might Be Giants.

As for bands not mentioned that I’d like to see, I’d say Linkin Park, Vanessa Carlton and Panic! At The Disco would be interesting (and you know Panic! would be major specific, so its not like it’d be subtle), as well as Pink, James Blunt (that would be beautiful), and My Chemical Romance, if they ever were cool again.

  36. BrewnetOdette33 Avatar

Operator Please! They are my favorite band and I would flip out if they did! I love the violin in their music and I think that could work cool with wrock.
