The Wrock Wreview: A Change is Gonna Come

The Album

One of my all-time favorite wizard rock bands, Oliver Boyd and the Remembralls, has a side project called Edgar and the Family Bones. Originally released on December 29, 2007, A Change is Gonna Come includes two songs that were released in 2006 and 2007 and two instrumental pieces that were never released. It was rereleased on October 2, 2020. Let’s dig in! (Get it? Dig… the bones?)

The Tracks

A Change is Going to Come (Intro) starts off with a dark sounding beat and eerie instrumentals. Then a robotic voices comes in and tells us that a change is going to come. This intro is less than two minutes long, but sets the vibe for the rest of the EP.

The second song has ethereal instrumentals and a great beat to sway to. It’s called Such He Was Made. The vocals are tuned down for a lower-sounding, almost robotic voice, but I can definitely hear Oliver Boyd in it. This song makes me want to put on my dark wizard punk outfit and go out on the town to be broody and cool.

Next up is The Last Day of Bones, which starts with a combination of electronic music and church bells. A percussive beat comes in, followed closely by the vocals, which are a mixture of a deep bass and higher harmonies. The lyrics are solemn and uplifting at the same time, which I love.

The last piece is Hedwig’s Theme (Remix) which is exactly what the title implies it is. Using echoes, electric guitar, clips from the movies, and a dope underlying beat, this remix is chill and punk at the same time. It’s a beautiful ending to this four song EP.

In Summary

Even though it’s short, I really enjoyed listening to this EP. The sound of it is so different than Oliver Boyd but I still like it. Check it out, give it a listen, and enjoy the unearthly music of Edgar and the Family Bones! I rate this EP a Susan/Bones.
