Question Everyday, part 3

Everyone is doing such a great job helping us remember wrock in 2009! Here’s some more categories for you to think on:

Best New Artist
Best Compilation Album
Best Live Act

For Best New Artist, I can think of two just off the top of my head: I Speak Tree and Standing in Line. I highly recommend both of them.

Best Compilation Album: I know All You Need is Wizard Love came out in 2009, as did the Draco and the Malfoys tribute album, We’re Freakin’ Awesome: A Tribute to Draco and the Malfoys. What else?

Best Live Act: I have seen Justin Finch-Fletchley and the Sugar Quills bleed during his sets more often than not. If that’s not giving it your all, I don’t know what is. Plus, he handed out flowers during his Wrockstock set!
However, between LeakyCon and Wrockstock and everything in between, I was also blown away by many others. This is a tough call.

There was Jingle Spells 3 and the holiday comp that Witherwings put out.
Diagon Alley, Russ, Steph, DatM, The Mudbloods all had excellent Wrockstock sets.

Best New Artist – Standing in Line – this young lady is phenomenal! MC Kreacher really took the scene by storm.a

Best Compilation – were there many compilations this year?

Best Live Act – I really love watching TRL perform – especially as a full band. They are tight. HaTP continue to give generously to audiences. I also really love Bella & Le Strangers in the flesh. Hawthorn & Holly. oh and Gred & Forge. oooo there’s just too many!

I think Charlie and the Dragon were new in 2009. They played at the North Carolina Yule Ball!

Best new artist has to be Standing in Line. Or I Speak Tree. Both are awesome.

Best comp is either Jingle Spells 3 or WRocking in a Winter Wonderland.

Best live act is Harry and the Potters. No question. 🙂

I Speak Tree all the way for Best New Artist!

Jingle Spells 3 would get my vote for best comp.

And I would vote Harry and the Potters for best live act, as their performances were the best I saw in 2010. 🙂

Actually, I gotta say that the Malfoys also put on some ridiculously good shows in 2010. They broke ground with their bluegrass-style sets. The Remus Lupins put on (IMO) their best show ever at Azkatraz. And my eternal tourmate JFF breaks strings, fingers, and guitars on a regular basis. So yeah… that one’s a close one!

A few more bands I think should be contenders for Best New Artist:

Alohomora (the band is new, even if the people in it aren’t)
    Leth I. Fold
    The Deathsticks
    Krum’s Girl
    Let’s Lumos!
    Ninen 3/4
Oliver Wood and the Diagon Alley Band
    The Azkaban Work-Release Program
    The Potterwatch Project
    Sweetwater All-Stars

My favorite best live act of 2009 was Harry and the Potters. I saw them twice (three times if you count their Dumbledore side project). Back in May I saw them play with a guitar shaped like a broom, hand out bacon, have mystery costumed guests perform with them onstage, and drop beats like dark wizards. In November in St. Louis I saw them perform in a dome – singing while swinging from a giant rope swing. And then they did a special acoustic set on the back of a magic bus! They have the ability to get even the most reserved audience members singing and shouting along.

    Best New Band:
Would like to second Sweetwater All-Stars, The Deathsticks, The Azkaban Work-Release Program, and ask to nominate The Buttermellows.
The Buttermellows started on 29 December 2008, so really how likely is it that word could have gotten around about her in time for last year’s awards? She’s only two days away from the deadline…
If it weren’t my band, I might second the Leth I. Fold. But I am biased and so won’t.

Best Live Act: Swish and Flick, The Blibbering Humdingers

best new band- The Potterwatch Project, Lumos + Nox

Just want to remind everyone that I am also a candidate in these 3 categories. Here are my voting suggestions.

Best New Artist – the Giant Squidstravaganza
Best Compilation Album – the Giant Squidstravaganza’s “Death to Humans”
Best Live Act – the Giant Squidstravaganza

I realize that voting for me as Best New Artist may feel weird to some of you. After all, I’ve been involved in wizard rock since the mid-’60’s. But, at least according to the internet, one definition of word “new” is as follows: existing before but seen or experienced now for the first time. So by reasonable logic, if 2009 was your first “experience” with the GIant Squidstravaganza, then you have no choice but to vote for me.

    Your friend,
    the Giant Squidstravaganza

    definitely standing in line!

for live i’d have to say harry and the potters as well. also the remus lupins, and i saw swish and flick live for the first time in 2009, and they were amazing live.

I think we can let The Buttermellows count for 2009. 🙂

The “New artist” has to be 2009, I see a lot of “I Speak Tree” and she’s 2008.

    Miss Parkinson- Best new Artist.

@Jacquelyn: We go by when the MySpace page was created, so I Speak Tree is 2009. We realize not every band started exactly when they made their MySpace, but we need a consistent way to check.
Tianna received a lot of votes last year, but we realized she counted as 2009.

For best live act, there is no other than Swish and Flick. Her sets are PHENOMENAL – everyone ends up dancing like crazy whenever she’s on stage. The cream of the crop, though, would have to be her Evil Day 2 set: a battle for “Quidditch Witch,” over a dozen people doing the “S-L-Y” cheerleading routine, the entire audience shouting “I’ve Been a Veyr Naughty Girl This Year,” and even as a Brooklyner I never saw as much cursing as during her performance of “My Dad Is Rich.”

Harry and the Potters were amazing beyond belief as well, but I really believe this one shoudl go to Swish and Flick.

@Freya Thanks for clearing that up, but that kinda sucks for the rest of us now. Just like… She’s had more time to create a fanbase and whatnot and… does that make sense? Like I know she was getting a hundred some views on her youtube before she made her myspace, so she already have people in her fanbase.

Best New Artist: Standing In Line
    or
    Pygmy Puff Invasion
    Best Compilation Album: uhh…
Best Live Act: DATM, JFF, Gred and Forge, Hawthorn and Holly, The Blibbering Humdingers! Diagon Alley!

So, I know I’m a bit late on this, but HUGE hugs to @Marauder and @badger666 for mentioning The Potterwatch Project for Best New Artist. We love you!

Besides us (teehee), I think Let’s Lumos! definitely deserves a nomination for Best New Artist. They’re awesome.

For Live Act, I’d have to go with either The Remus Lupins, The Whomping Willows, or JFF. I’ve seen all three of them this year (some more than once), and all were face-meltingly awesome every time.

This is kind of late (sorry)

Live Act- my votes would go to the Whomping Willows & the Remus Lupins’ absolutely epic & creative “protest” concert on the National Mall in Washington DC and Ministry of Magic at the post-Leaky con

  22. PK9 Avatar

Is The Dumbledore’s Army Band 2009? That’s what it says on their myspace. I just stumbled across them just now, they’ve got a couple pretty awesome songs!

  23. WizardRockDA Avatar

@PK9: Our original MySpace page was actually made in December 2006 as simply “Dumbledore’s Army.” It got deleted at some point in May 2008 after the pressures of International Super-Stardom became too much to handle and we underwent a tragic and cliche downward spiral into depressingly boring and mundane activities. But then we came to our senses and realized Wizard Rock is actually what makes the world go around, and so fearing the disastrous environmental and sociopolitical consequences that could arise if the world stopped turning, we decided we better go back to it. So we made a new MySpace page when we returned to the scene in March of last year with a slightly altered band name and a fresh start.

(Disclaimer: Some details of this explanation may be slightly exaggerated and/or completely fabricated. We assure everyone reading, however, that this version of events is much more interesting than how things actually happened. :P)
