Question Everyday, part II

Thanks to everyone who added their two cents for yesterday’s categories! Don’t forget to keep thinking and posting comments as you come across them!

Today, we’re asking for more song help, along with a category given to someone behind the scenes.

Best Album Art
Best Holiday Song
Best Comedy Song

For album art, any EP or LP released in 2009 is eligible. I buy a lot of music via iTunes, so sometimes I don’t even see the art! Leave a link to anything you recommend in the comments.

As for the holiday song, don’t forget about Jingle Spells 3 or Wrockin’ in a Wizard Wonderland.

Comedy has a plethora of entries every year, but right now, all I can hear in my head is ‘Merch Girls are Easy’ by The Whomping Willows.

Who would you nominate for these categories?

Again, shameless self-pimpage, but big ups to NaggingFishWife for making the amazing album art for our album Not Safe For Wizardkind: (LINK NSFW) http://bit.ly/1uB7WB

Also, I think there should be some way to give Lifetime Achievement Awards to everyone who has worked on the EP of the Month Club EPs album art, from the vibrant colors of 07, to the great wood-cutting-esque style of 08, to the very clever stamp designs of 09. I’m serious, big ups to everyone who worked on those covers.

Also, big downs to myself for using the phrase “big ups” more than once.

Also, “Up To No Good” very simply and eloquently conveys the feeling of the album, and while I’m not a huge fan of the album, I quite enjoy Frak’s artwork for “Onward and Upward”.

Lastly, “Thestrals In Heat” by Draco and the Malfoys FTW. My life goal is to dump someone by singing that song. And “My Dad Is Rich On A Boat” is AMAZING. And “Glasses” by The Moaning Myrtles. And “My Wish List” by MC Kreacher totally deserves a nom for both Best Holiday and Best comedy song. And pretty much anything off of Hymns Of Truth And Light by Mary and the Grand Pres. And “The Happy Dementor” by Hogwarts Trainwreck. And anything off the Bob Dylan EP. Okay, I’ll stop now… 😉

I submit “Sonorus” by Romilda Vane and the Chocolate Cauldrons and “It’s Not Christmas” by the Moaning Myrtles for Best Holiday Song. Those are my favorites off of Jingle Spells 3.

OH! “House Elf Party” by the Blibbering Humdingers.

And I completely agree with “Merch Girls Are Easy.” That one makes me giggle every time.

For album art… The Slighly Offensive & Naughty EP by the Blibbering Humdingers. I THINK that came out last year. The whole EP is gorgeous and handmade: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=42259135
I also liked Songs from Beedle the Bard’s full album art by the Butterbeer Experience and of course the art on Onward and Upward by the MoM.

Comedy: definitely My Dad is Rich (on a Boat)! I liked Merch Girls Are Easy as well. Then there’s Peeved’s epic The Ballad of Mr. Percy Weasley (and I suppose I get a good laugh out of his Expelliarmus Kid song as well). And I always get a kick out of Taking You Back by Tonks & the Aurors (featuring the Remus Lupins) though that’s not really strictly a humor song so… I dunno.

Holiday: I loved Magical Christmas (House of Black), It’s Not Christmas (The Moaning Myrtles), and Sonorus! (Romilda Vane)

  4. Marauder Avatar

    Eligible for Holiday Song nominations:

    “Valentine” by Krum’s Girl

    Comedy:

“Super Special Secret Bonus Track of Awesome” by The Butterbeer Experience

Definitely “Onward and Upward” for best album art.

Anything by The Blibbering Humdingers for best comedy song.

  7. Freya Avatar

I’m so glad everyone else loves ‘Sonorous’, too! It’s beautiful.
Don’t forget Frak’s artwork for Demons at the Helm: http://viewmorepics.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=viewImage&friendID=35315863&albumID=13104&imageID=59510268

I’m a bit bummed to see a lack of photographic representation for album art. I think SquibGirl totally rocked ALL of the album photography for “We Are Magic” (logo design by myself) and Brandon Nicholas also did some kick ass photography for The Remus Lupins’ “The Rest is Silence”

  9. Trudy Avatar
    Trudy

yeah, definitely The Rest is Silence for album artwork. onward and upward and songs from beedle the bard as well. i also quite like the artwork from the moaning myrltes ep of the month club, bathroom accoustics.

for holiday song i’d say romilda’s sonorous.

does thestrals in heat count at coming out in 2009 even though it was on the summer edition of it’s a slytherin world in 2008? if it does i absolutely second that.

  10. Russ Avatar

I think we should just vote “Brotherly Love” in perpetuity.

    Dear “friends,”

Thank you for asking my opinion on which of my song or albums should be the clear winner in the following categories. Here are my suggestions.

Best Album Art – the Giant Squidstravaganza’s “Death to Humans” album
Best Holiday Song – the Giant Squidstravagaza’s “Oh Holy Night”
Best Comedy Song – the Giant Squidstravaganza’s “Stand-up Routine (dress rehearsal)”

Thank you for your votes this year. I really need the prize money.

    Your friend,

For album art, what about “In the House of Black” by swish and Flick and “Jingle Spells 3”?

For comedy, the song that makes me laugh every time is “No Squeeing in the Library” by Madam Pince.

Best holiday song: “Sonorus!”, “Malfoy ofr Christmas,” and the “Fa La La La” song by Madam Pince

  13. Denni Towle Avatar

    Best album art…yes again…Swish & Flick

  14. Scott Humdinger Avatar

I want to nominate “The Diagon Alley CD” partly for the artwork, but mostly for the awesome handmade packaging (which I consider part of the artwork).

For holiday song, I also want to shout out “Sonorus” by RVatCC, unless someone knows of a good Halloween song – because that’s my favorite holiday. 🙂

For Comedy – I bow down before the awesomeness of Peeved – Pretty Girl. Another great comedy piece is House Elf 4 Life by MC Kreacher. What releases did Bella & LeStrangers have in 2009… I love them. They are evil.

  15. Marauder Avatar

I’m pretty sure “Pretty Girl” by Peeved came out late in 2008; I remember Mr. Marauder’s little sister going around the house singing it during the Christmas break before last Christmas break.

  16. palantiriel Avatar
    palantiriel

Most of Peeved’s songs came out in 2008 I think, but they were on the 2009 EP of the Month Club, so I hope they count! Other songs that always make me laugh are “Please Harry” by the Parselmouths, “Bathroom Acoustics” by the Moaning Myrtles, and all of the Blibbering Humdingers songs, especially “Has Anybody Seen My Goyle?”, “Romilda” and “Shoelace”.

I’d vote Sonorous for holiday songs too, but I also love HatP’s “Christmas Shopping for Dobby” and The Remus Lupins’ “Light the Castle Up”

And artwork-wise the cover for TRL’s “Nevermind the Furthermore” made me want it before I even heard the music. And Frak’s MoM artwork wrocks. I also like the simplicity of OBatR’s “Bare Bones” EP.

And ALL of the EPotM covers are outstanding (RiddleTM’s magpiesare my favourite).

It’s Not Christmas: Best Holiday song

This is all I can really put. I’m a more of a 2005-2008 girl, myself. Dang!

  18. Jarrod Avatar
    Jarrod

“Merch Girls Are Easy” isn’t a comedy song. It’s just a fact.
    😉

  19. Freya Avatar

@Trudy, @palantriel – As long as it was released in some form in 2009, it counts! So, yes to both of you.

@Jarrod – I’m SO telling SammyG you said that. 😛

If peeved’s songs count, definitely “The Year that Harry Went Emo” for best comedy song. That song makes me laugh no matter how many times I hear it. And it’s just well-sung too!

    Best Comedy Song:
“If I Were a Snitch Man” by The First Task is Dragons
“The Last Word of the Book Wasn’t Ska!” by Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office
“Tonight We Fight Zombies! (Aim for the Head)” by Tonks and the Aurors
    “Weasley’s Wizarding Wheezes” by RiddleTM

“The Year Harry Went Emo” is from 2008 (on the Siriusly Smiling compilation). It’s a brilliant song, though.

  23. Art Avatar

On the topic of photographic album art: Leah’s photography for “Our Fate Is Sealed” (Hawthorn & Holly)!

  24. Freya Avatar

@badger666 Was ‘The Year Harry Went Emo’ released on Peeved’s 2009 EPotM? I can’t find my copy at the moment, but if so, then it does count.

  25. Russ Avatar

Don’t get me wrong, I love Jack, but doesn’t that open up a can of worms as far as when something was released? If a song was released on an available comp or as a download on MySpace in 2008, I don’t understand how a re-release qualifies it for 2009 recognition.

I’m not going to add a “just sayin’…” here either, because I think it’s a valid question.

  26. Dawlish and the Archies Avatar

I’m also a big fan of Peeved, but if there were no differences between a song released in 2008 (and not at the very end, either, and some even before), and the one released on an album in 2009, I don’t think they should be counted. The only Peeved songs that should be eligible for an award is the Hedwig’s Theme remix, the open letter to Michael Gambon, and the open letter to Laura Mallory AND OH MY GOD WHY HAS NOBODY NOMMED THIS ONE YET, INCLUDING MYSELF? THE ENTIRE EP WAS WORTH IT, PURELY FOR THAT SONG.

Also, I second “If I Were A Snitch Man” for Best Comedy, and Best Filk. I DON’T CARE IF IT’S NOT A CATEGORY, I’M MAKING IT ONE ANYWAY! Also, “Another Vodka For Voldie” by Statutory Snape.
