Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jam: March 2023

Welcome back, wrock friends! Let’s have another Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jam, a monthly creative challenge where you take a theme and make whatever you’re inspired to, in any medium. Before we get to this month’s prompt, let’s see how you raised your voices for last month’s theme of protest.

Lan of Bisexual Harry curated a wrock playlist entitled “Ten Favorite Wizard Rock Protest Songs To Listen To On The Way To Your Local Action”, which you can listen to here. It’s hard not to get pumped up listening to these songs that remind us what we fight for:

Hawthorn & Holly – We Are the Wizard Resistance
Tonks & the Aurors – Yes All Witches
Ludo Bagman and the Trash – We Fight For All
Totally Knuts – Lumos
Seven Potters – Why Fight?
The Whomping Willows – Punch Up
Candle Wix – Wizard ?narchy
Pussycat Dolores – Witches Unite!
Potterwatch – Potterwatch Anthem
Harry and the Potters – The Weapon

I also have an anonymous angry poem about being a nonbinary wrocker:

Some writer goes and writes off my friends and me
As fakers and dangers and fools, but only some see
The hate in the words that try to make us dissolve
Misconceptions, not people, are the problems to solve
As a good friend said, what a time to be a wix.

Just started in the art of parody
My world’s shaken and taking a turn, but standing with me
Are wrockers and friends who know what is right
And with respect, love, and music, we continue to fight
As a good friend said, what a time to be a wix.

Some leave, but they leave us with a legacy
Of supporting each other so well that we can be
Community caring what we create
Without anyone’s existence ever up for debate
As a good friend said, what a time to be a wix.

Beware of those wearing house pride, it seems
The best and the worst wear the same shirt, but ask me
If I want to give up the ground that I’ve got
I’d rather pull back the power and pick my own plot
As a good friend said, what a time to be a wix.

Authorities and authors, I must disagree
We’re magic and music and love, but only some see
The joy in our hearts when we are true to ourselves
And connecting with better than what’s up on the shelves
As a good friend said, what a time to be a wix.

Now, on to our next month’s theme: time. I’ve been thinking about time a lot lately—sunsets and schedules, spans away from friends, deadlines and plans… I’m even buying a new watch presently. Not coincidentally, this month marks two years since I took over the Jam from Grace Kendall. A massive thank you to them and to everyone who’s created and shared! I love getting to be part of it all, and I hope to continue for quite some time.

For anyone thinking of joining in the Every Flavour Jam: Every kind of creative work is welcome, from playlists to paintings and beyond. It’s also totally fine to quickly throw something together, or to share unfinished work if you’re willing. It’s all good! I’ll see you in another month, and I’m very much looking forward to the days ahead.
