The Wrock Wreview: Alone in the Dark

The Album

Hello and welcome to another Wrock Wreview! Today we’re going to take a look at Alone in the Dark by MC Kreacher. This EP was originally released as part of the 2009 Wizard Rock EP of the Month Club and was rereleased on April 2, 2021. Let’s dive into the inky depths of Kreacher’s mind as we explore his innermost thoughts through rap.

The Tracks

Voices in My Head is the first track in the EP and is an introduction to Kreacher; where he lives, what he thinks of the Order in his master’s house, and how he feels about life in general. The rhymes are slick and the background to the vocals is super cool.

Kreacher’s hatred of the Order of the Phoenix comes to light in Don’t Touch That! Sarcastic lyrics tell everyone what’s really on his mind. He is very protective of every item in the House of Black, and as the title implies, he warns everyone who comes in to not touch anything. The song is fun and fast, with incredible rhymes.

We slow down with the next track, Black at Heart. Kreacher reminisces about his life with Mrs. Black and how it has all gone downhill since Sirius came back and took over. This song has a great groove and I found myself snapping along. It amazes me that a rapping Kreacher can sound so good.

My Precious, a clear nod to The Lord of the Rings’ Gollem, is a more melodic take on Kreacher’s most treasured possession – the Slytherin family locket. From his time in the cave with the inferi to when Harry gave him the replica locket, this song takes us on a journey through what Kreacher has gone through in order to reunite with his “precious.”

The next song is for all of the magical folks in the resistance against Voldemort. We Are Wizards is the only track on this EP that is not from Kreacher’s point of view. It is a rally cry to all of Harry’s supporters, with dark words underlying a light hope.

House Elf 4 Life is the last track on the EP where Kreacher talks about his life as a house-elf. Smooth rhymes combined with the groove of the underlying beat track makes an excellent final piece to the album.

In Summary

Anyone who listens to MC Kreacher’s music is bound to like the character at least a little bit more by the end of it. The way that the rhymes flow are so smooth and incredible. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to these songs. As a rating, I would give Kreacher the real Slytherin Locket (ideally without the horcrux).
