The Wrock Wreview: Nocturnes

The Album

Note: The image shown is not the original EP cover; this image was taken from The Owl Post’s old MySpace page!

The wizard rock band The Owl Post only ever released one EP, and that’s what we are going to review today! Originally released on May 1, 2007, and rereleased on July 17, 2020, Nocturnes has six tracks total. Let’s fly in and take a look!

The Tracks

Anticipation starts off the EP. A single vocal is accompanied by electric guitar (bass?) and piano. The melody is catchy and the chord changes are reliable and easy to listen to. It’s a great start to this EP!

We get another great melody in Voldy is a Waste, which is also a catchy tune. I’m reminded of summer pop concerts and I love the variation of the keyboard that they use in this track.

Fire and Ice is an up-tempo love song about melting every time you see the one you love burning. The instrumentals and vocals both continue to have a pop-rock sound which I enjoy.

Another love song follows on the heels of Fire and Ice with a track called Be My Pansy. A drum set and backup vocals fill out this song really nicely. The singer lets Pansy know that he’ll be like Draco, but not quite as evil. Even though this song is about Pansy Parkinson, it is very sweet and I liked it a lot.

(CW: Mention of The Remus Lupins)
Wiz Rock MMMmmm Bop does not disappoint if you, like me, read the title and expected to hear… well, give the chorus a listen and you’ll see what I’m talking about. A shout-out to the wizard rock community, the singer mentions several of our favorite bands (however, it does include The Remus Lupins).

The final song is a tribute to and cover of Harry and the PottersSave Ginny Weasley. It’s a classic song and I never get tired of listening to covers of it. Give it a listen yourself to decide how it compares to the original!

In Summary

Short and sweet, this album was absolutely lovely. I enjoyed the old school wizard rock/pop feel from each track, as well as the cover of Save Ginny Weasley. I really had a good time listening to this little album. I give this EP a rating of One Hogwarts Letter delivered, of course, by Owl Post.
