Happy new year, wizard rock fans! Welcome to another Bertie Bott’s Every Flavour Jam, a creative challenge for anyone who likes making stuff! Every month we have a different theme or prompt for people to respond to. In the past we’ve seen visual art, cover song videos, poetry, song lyric snippets, and fully-produced new songs. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of creativity the new year will bring!
December’s theme brought a wintry vibe: snow! Let’s take a look back at all the amazing creations December brought us, and then we’ll reveal the theme for January at the end of the post.
First up, it’s Bertie Bott’s regular TK from Totally Knuts! They did a beautiful job coloring this geometric snowflake design made by the artist Bee. The colors are so bright and so inviting, and I feel like this would look gorgeous as a stained glass window. Can’t you just imagine light pouring through those panels?
Next up is everyone’s favorite hostwitch – Bess from WZRD Radio Podcast! Bess took a classic craft and gave it a wizard rock twist. She made these incredibly clever and detailed paper snowflakes! If you look closely, you’ll find some magical designs tucked into some of them! The Sorting Hat is a definite standout for me, but I think the cat has to be my favorite. Look at those little ears!
Rounding out December’s snow creations is Mermanda of Muggle Snuggle. Mermanda plays approximately twelve thousand different instruments, so it was delightful to see her pull out the lyre harp, mandolin, and bass xylophone to cover a Hawthorn and Holly song. Mermanda’s version of “A Snow Falls Soft” is delicate and haunting, and perfectly evokes a winter snowfall. Her vocals soar in this tender delivery of one of the saddest wizarding Christmas songs. Stream it on Bandcamp or download a copy to keep forever – it’s pay what you want!
Now, into the new year we go! A lot of people dream big dreams at the beginning of the year or try to predict what the coming months will hold for them, so for January we’re going with the theme of “divination.”
You’re invited to make any kind of creative response to the theme and share it in the comments for everyone to enjoy. All kinds of submissions are welcome! Write a song about unfogging the future, make a video dancing to a song about Professor Trelawney, write out a list of your own invented fates like Ron and Harry do for their divination homework, or create a custom tarot spread for wizard rock fans. It doesn’t have to be polished or professional, or even finished! Just use your imagination (and any prophetic powers you might possess!) and have fun.
