Question Tuesday

I think it’s safe to say that so many of us feel a personal connection to wizard rock, and some bands and songs in particular. So for this week’s Question Tuesday, we’d like to know:

What wizard rock song(s) move you in an emotional way?

I can freely admit that Riddle TMs “Look At Me” has always been a personal favorite of mine, and hearing them play it at Wrockstock III was a pretty emotional experience for me. I’ve also been known to get a lump in my throat during the “Dumbledore’s Army forever!” line coming out of the middle section of The Remus Lupins’ “The End“. Oh and I listened to Roonil Wazlib’s “Green Eyes” over 130 times before I was able to make it all the way through with dry eyes.

But enough about me! We’d like to know what wizard rock songs get you right in the gut. Let us know in the comments below!

Love this question. There are two songs that always stick out for me in this way. The first will probably be oft repeated by others, so here it is… The Mudbloods’ ‘A Pensieve Full of Unrequited Love’. For many obvious reasons.

The other is ‘Forget the Girl’ from How Airplanes Fly. Oh my god, does that song kill me (and gives me chills) every time.

Roonil Wazlib’s “Not The End” always gets me – the wonderful piano track, the slow build-up, it all just works so perfectly. TRL’s “Imprisoned Lightning” has that completely mind-blowing musical shakeup at the end that effects me emotionally less because of lyrics or anything, but because it is one of the most straight-up beautiful pieces of music in all of wizard rock. The Blibbering Humdinger’s surprisingly moving “I Lose Myself” is definitely there. And of course, it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t mention MoM’s “A Phoenix Lament”, which still gets me with its staggering beauty.

Oh yeah, and the Seven Potters’ “Then There Were Three” is really damn moving – “And as I walked through the rubble of the ruined school, my heart still pounding and my breath still cool – death still lingered about me. I passed the dead and the living and the in-between, my family, friends, lovers, and enemies, but in my eyes, it was only us three.”

    GAH. RIGHT IN THE FEELS.

Ah! I just remembered another amazing one. It’s by Potter Noyz and I believe it’s ‘For Fred’ or something along those lines (totally zoning out on the title right now and don’t have time to look it up). It kills me every time! It’s sung from the perspective of George and talks about how he won’t cry when he thinks of his brother, but he’ll laugh because that’s what he’d want.

Also ‘The Family Name’ by Neville’s Diary. Just… fantastic! I actually discovered these two songs at almost the same time!

The one that always gets me is “Freak” from Lauren Fairweather’s The Prince’s Tale.

I’m usually in tears by the first chorus of Riddle TM’s “For Jo”.

Also, there’s this little performed piece from The Remus Lupins called “Proud” I still don’t care for the verses (musically) but I really love the chorus and really connect to it. I think it is the first song I heard from Mr. Carpenter that convinced me he wasn’t just a pretty boy with a guitar.

The Butterbeer Experience’s ‘Prince’s Tale’ really gets me, as does RVatCC’s Godric’s Hollow’. As previously mentioned, Phoenix Lament and Look at me, oh and pretty much anything by Let’s Lumos. Snob, have you heard anything by the Pumpkin Pasties yet?

Roonil Wazlib’s “Shell Cottage” always gets me. It took several listens before I was able to get through it without crying. It also helps that it’s about my favorite scene in the canon. Lauren’s song “Keep Her Safe” also really hits hard for me.

Butterbeer Experience “Merope’s Song” “But what is blood when I only see beauty?”

And quite a few from AVPM 2. I know we like to keep the two categories separate, but wtva! I just listened to it for the first time last night (I know!) and I sat there bawling. They took their job as musical theatre composers seriously and got into the heads of those characters so effectively. Kudos!

Seen and Unforeseen just released a new song that is a killer too. This Slytherin heart was crying again:

RiddleTM’s “Sixteen Years Ago” always tears me up. It’s a nearly flawless delivery of emotion.

“The End” by the Remus Lupins is an emotional punch to the gut. Always feels really good to come out of that.

The chorus of the Blibbering Humdingers’ “Waiting on the Other Side” is pretty killer.

And “Grindelwald’s Song” by Nagini has a lot of emotion for me.

Prince’s Tail by the Butterbeer Experience, For Jo by Riddle TM, Phoenix Song by Harry and the Potters, Celebrate the Day by Riddle TM, When the Lights Go Out by the Whomping Willows & Survivor by Danny Dementor, Gone by Lauren Fairweather, Since March, Since September and Still by the Mudbloods.

Oh god, ‘The End’ definitely gets me. You shouldn’t have come here tonight, Tom! God, what a fucking great song. When Alex hits highs, what great heights he reaches.

‘Phoenix Song’ and ‘Dumbledore’ and ‘Flesh, Blood , and Bone’ all get me in a big way. When HatP wanna get deep, they get deep.

The third one doesn’t really count… but I can barely rewatch the video I have of The Whomping Willows’ cover of Cheap Trick’s ‘Surrender’ at LeakyCon 2009 without chopping onions, so to speak.

So many! Definitely RiddleTM’s “For Jo,” Oliver Boyd’s “End of an Era.” Lots of those nostalgic fandom songs. The sweet sadness of Tonks and the Aurors’ “Remember” always gets me too.

There’s the obvious ones – “For Jo” at the top of the list, “I Lose Myself,” “Prince’s Tale” by BUtterbeer Experience, most of Lauren’s “Prince’s Tale” album. But the unexpected one that always makes me cry is “Ascendio” by MoM – the part where they sing “I am not a burden, not good for nothing…” my heart just breaks for Harry.
