Question Tuesday

I’ve been listening to ‘A Very Potter Musical’ lately, and it got me to thinking.

Is this wizard rock?

Musicals tend to have songs with a much more narrative style than a lot of music, but there are plenty of narrative wizard rock songs. Plus, we have The Butterbeer Experience‘s Fair Fortune opera, which I have always considered wizard rock. I suppose the main point would have to be whether the song can exist outside the musical and still be relatable. I think it definitely does.

So, I’ll have to say yes, and be the first to welcome Team Star Kid to the wizard rock scene!

I say yes, too! I also think it helps that a lot of wizard rock fans have jumped onto the AVPM bandwagon.

I say yes! And not just because I classified them as such on the re-read blog last week. However, the gentlemen responsible for AVPM have created many other things too, including the webseries Little White Lie, their own personal music, and their newest show, called “Me and My Dick.” These endeavors aren’t Potter-related, so I’d say that while A Very Potter Musical itself is a wonderful expansion of the wrock genre (SHOWTUNES!! YES!!!!) Team Star Kid itself isn’t so narrowly defined.

And oh man, Lena’s musical is so cool. I can’t wait to hear the new one (Blood & Beauty) at Infinitus!

I think any fan-created song about Harry Potter counts as wizard rock, so yes, this definitely does.

It definitely counts. The Fair Fortune opera was absolutely amazing, and as long as musicals count as music, AVPM counts as wizard rock.

I don’t think that it counts as ‘wizard rock.’ I think AVPM and Fair Fortune should have their own category. It’s less of a rock concert and more of wizard theatre.

Well, I did put it as Wizard Rock on my iPod, so I could listen to my other wrock songs and AVPM.
    I guess it’s unintended WRock 😛

I view any music about Harry Potter as wizard rock, even if the artist wouldn’t call himself wizard rock. For example, I’d call Marc Gunn’s “My Father Was a Werewolf” wizard rock even though he has (to my knowledge) only one song about Harry Potter. I don’t think genre matters when it comes to wrock since we classify everything from folk to heavy metal under the some wrock blanket.

I agree with the previous comments. Even if it’s not technically rock but as a genre a musical or a opera, it still qualifies as the genre “wizard rock” which is the general term for music relating to Harry Potter. Under this general term, we could view if we want (but it’s not necessary) subcategories like wizard music, wizard opera, wizhop, wizrap, etc…

    Yes.

And you know what? I’d go even further: music which is inspired by the Wizarding World but is not necessrily overtly _about_ it can be considered “wizard rock,” too. At least as long as you don’t have to look too terribly hard to find that inspiration! Lamia from The Sectumsempras coined a term for this sort of thing, and I think it’s brilliant: “Post-Potter Wizard Rock.”

I’m kind of hoping the track we’re working on right now, “Where Magic Meets Machine” ends up a good example of this. I just finished the lyrics (instrumental-only version’s up on the MySpace profile!). There are no obvious Potterverse references, but the entire point of the lyrics derived from musings I’ve had on the ramifications of the Age of Reason’s abandonment of “magic.” Those musings in turn resulted directly from my habitual daydreaming about the Potterverse! Does that make the song “wrock?” I think it does!

i say yes. “wizard rock” has always been kind of a misnomer anyway. it encompasses many different styles other than rock.

I would definitely classify the AVPM soundtrack as wizard rock. It’s music, it’s awesome, and it’s about Harry Potter. Wizard rock.

That being said, though, I wouldn’t classify the StarKidPotter people as wizard rockers. AVPM was just one of their many projects, and nobody had expected it to take off like it did. AVPM is a play, written and performed by a theatre company, and what we call wizard rock is just the soundtrack. That’s what I think differentiates it from Lena’s wrock opera, which I’ve always seen as more of an “extended” wizard rock song.

I class them in the same area as Potter Puppet Pals, as sort-of wrock, although the people who make the music aren’t wrockers as such, it’s still Pottery music!

LunasCeiling: Is Lamia still doing any Post-Potter Wizard Rock? Because I was really sad when she decided she was done with The Sectumsempras…

I’d say the StarKidPotter people are wizard rockers among many other things. Switchblade Kittens have other projects, like their album about Meg Cabot books, but they still count as wizard rockers.

Marauder, I haven’t heard anything from Lamia in a good while. Which is really too bad, since I think she’s fantastic (The Sectumsempras were one of the reasons I decided to start Luna’s Ceiling, in fact!). I need to get back in touch with her and see what’s going on with her, musically.

I love AVPM. In fact, I currently have “Not Alone” stuck in my head. I personally classify it as Wizard Rock because, by definition, Wizard Rock is music about/related to the HP books, movies, or fandom. Am I right? So, this fits right in. It’s a parody, yes, but, then again, aren’t there a lot of wrock songs that are rather parodical?

I take all of that back. IT’S AS AWESOME AS VOLDEMORT!

I hope it counts as wizard rock, because then i can tell my friends at school that they lisen to wizrock =). but seriously, it’s kinda wierd that this is the question because about five people at my school have asked me if i have seen it in the last week. Yeah, it counts as Wrock, it is music about Harry Potter. It counts.
