Question Tuesday

There is a great discussion going on at our Wrock for Equality article about the nature of politics and wizard rock.

Aside from politics in real life, there is plenty about politics in the Harry Potter series, and plenty of songs that explore these themes.

What’s your favorite political wizard rock song?

While The Whomping Willows‘ ‘Draco and Harry’ will always be a favorite of mine, I am a huge fan of The Basilisk in Your Pasta‘s ‘Voldemort Peace Off’, with mentions of racism, genocide, and the environment, not to mention getting a dig in about their own political leader, Nicolas Sarkozy.

My fave is The Remus Lupins’ APWBD

Cornelius Fudge Is An Ass. Even if it didn’t have a political message, it’s catchy as hell.

(And I love the lyric change when they play it live. Hah.)

Also, The Monkey Suit is awesome. Totally punk rock.

Draco and Harry is one of my favorites too, and Voldemort Can’t Stop the Rock is always a classic, but if I was to pick one favorite I think it might be

(never) Do What You’re Told by The Remus Lupins

I have always loved “Fated” by the Remus Lupins. Its simple, catchy, straightforward, and its message is one that EVERYONE can relate to: Its a messed up world, but we CAN make a difference.

“We are young, and we know this world can be so much better!
We are young, and we’ll make the wizarding world so much better!”

Oh, WizardRockDA, I’d forgotten about “Fated,” but you’re right, it’s an awesome song.

Monkey Suit (HatP) and Thoughts on the Ministry of Magic (Whompy)are great, but I think my favorite is The HP Alliance Rap.

I love “(Never) Do what you’re told” by TRL and “The Ministry of Magic” by MoM too.

“Draco and Harry” is #2 on my list – I was in Massachusetts the first time I heard it, so that was fun – but #1 is “Everything Is Better” by The Unforgivable Curses.

Has anyone ever made a list of all the political wizard rock songs? I think it would be kind of fun to see how many there are.

I have to agree with Patrick. I LOVE thoughts on the ministry of magic.

Probably Whompy’s Thoughts on the MoM. Or JFF’s Eff the Ministry.

As much as I love ALL of what everyone’s said so far… I think my favorite is ‘Ministry of Magic’ by Ministry of Magic. That song is the most hilarious satirical propaganda ever. Okay, so I just think it’s particularly funny because it’s propaganda for the Ministry of Magic and that, in and of itself, is glorious.

I’m a shameless self promoter, and a shameless gay right activist so my picks include my own songs too ^^

“The Empty Corridor” – Miss Parkinson
“Don’t Call My Boyfriend A Fag” – Miss Parkinson
“Draco and Harry” – The Whomping Willows
“(never) Do What You’re Told”- The Remus Lupins

Jacquelyn: Woo hoo, more gay songs! I haven’t listened to all of yours yet, so I’ll have to make sure to check those out. 😀

I’ve got a whole album of gay songs, but the only one that’s more political than romantic, I think, is called “Rabbi Crabbe and Goyle the Mohel.” (Everyone Else: Um, WHAT?) Crabbe survives the Fiendfyre when he hears God speaking to him like God spoke to Moses with the burning bush; God tells Crabbe and he and Goyle have to become Jews in order to be redeemed from helping Voldemort, so Crabbe becomes a rabbi and Goyle becomes a mohel (the guy who circumcises the little boys at their bris – it’s pronounced “moyle”). Crabbe ends up marrying a nice Jewish girl, but Goyle realizes he’s a gay Jew and runs off to San Francisco so he can be like Harvey Milk. 😀 Then he cruises the Castro, hooks up with Ernie Macmillan, and decides he can still fulfill his debt to the God of Abraham while having a male babe-raham.

It’s a little scary where your mind can go once you realize “Goyle” rhymes with “mohel” and “Crabbe” and “rabbi” share a syllable…

In the spirit of Jacquelyn’s shameless self-promotion, all my albums can be downloaded for free here:

Monkey Suit is my favorite. It was a huuuge influence on Thoughts on the Ministry of Magic, and on my own integration of politics and wizard rock in general. My song could not exist without Monkey Suit. 🙂

Save The Quibbler by Gred and Forge, Here’s the Scoop by DJ Luna Lovegood (and, if it counts, Under Your Nose (hermione) by DJ Luna, too), and of course, (Never) Do What Your Told by The Remus Lupins.

Also LOVE Draco and Harry. And House Of Awesome.

Haven’t heard Thoughts On The Ministry or Monkey Suit, but now I may look into those songs now.
