Question Tuesday

Everyone loves a good cover. For me, the only thing better is transforming it into a wizard rock song.

What’s your favorite wizard-rocked Muggle song?

I have to go with ‘Hippogriffs Deserve to Die’ by Draco and the Malfoys. The first time I heard it, I almost fell over in shock that someone would filk a System of a Down song. Plus, since a lot of my Muggle friends are metalheads, this is at least one wizard rock song that I can guarantee that they will like.

UPDATE: Ok, so it has been brought to my attention that ‘Hippogriffs Deserve to Die’ is not, in fact, a filk of ‘Chop Suey’ (thanks, Russ!) and I would like to extend my sincere apologies to Brian and Bradley for doubting their songwriting skills. I think if you listen to both ‘Chop Suey’ by System of a Down and ‘Hippogriffs Deserve to Die’, you can probably see where I got the comparison. I absolutely adore System, so any comparison to them is meant in purely a positive light. And yes, I feel sufficiently ridiculous about this. Feel free to mock me.

Honestly, even though its not a true filk or cover, nothing really beats HatP’s playing Smells Like Harry Potter live.

    PUKE CHECK!

Here In Your Car by MoM. It’s just awesome in general. 🙂

Ministry of Magic’s Here In Your Car.

My muggle friends heard it and started taking Wizard Rock seriously afterwards. 🙂

Tough call, but I’m so very fond of “Hey Remus” by The Whomping Willows.

This may not count, but I figure that the Whomping Willows cover of Cheap Trick’s ‘Surrender’ at Leakycon was 1) A great song to begin with but 2) the most beautiful live cover I’ve ever heard.

It was absolutely spectacular. The whole crowd was singing.

My favourite has to be ‘Wizards Who Died’ by Remus and the Lupins. It’s just straight up brilliant!

I’m going to have to go with 99 Death Eaters. The original is so quirkily fun, and those guys did it serious justice. I love the guitar solo at the end based on the original’s synth.

Yeah, I’d believe it too. 99 Death Eaters really is well done.

As for the best cover over another Wrocker’s song? Definitely ‘Your Family Sucks/So What If We’re Poor’ by Gred and Forge. His version sounds equal, if not better, than DatM, and the lyrics are just as amazing.

99 Death Eaters was my initial response, because I remember how much I loved it when I heard it for the first time (which was live, at a DatM concert). But I think Ministry of Magic’s Here In Your Car beat it by a little to be my favorite.

Heartbreaker :). It’s the first one that came to mind but there are lots of good ones.

There was an excellent filk of a song by a band whose name I can’t remember…
Hmm, Wizard in the Kitchen by TRAF is good.

I’ve looked through the wrock music I have and was really debating. There’s so many great covers. My favorites have to be 99 Deatheaters, Ginny Gets Around, Hey Remus, and the plethora of Christmas covers on Jingle Spells (they make me happy and sometimes I can trick my family into listening to the wrock versions :p).

However the #1 choice I found in my iTunes was….

A Little Less Incantation by Gred and Forge

I love the Mudbloods’ version of “Magic”.

Wizard in the Kitchen by Tom Riddle and Friends. Hands down best cover ever. I just really like the Mouldy Peaches.

I really like Whompy’s “Jenny Is A Punk Wrocker”. I like it to the point I have “Sheena Is A Punk Rocker” on my iPod also, and when it comes up, I always think it is wrong for a moment.

I think 99 Death Eaters has to be my favorite too.

99 Death Eaters singlehandedly introduced me to Wizard Rock.

Honorable Mention to Chinese Chomping Cabbages’ “Wizard of Mine” and Lauren Fairweather’s “I Want You to Whomp Me” (which I think was long before anything was going on between Lauren and Matt)

“Why Don’t We Do It In The Burrow” – Tonks and the Aurors.

I love “99 Death Eaters”, but my favourite is “We’re the students of Hogwarts”. Our Cathlove darling turned a pretty lame song (“We’re the kids in America”) into a DA/Defenders of Hogwarts epic hymn. Awesome.

…@patrick its ginny is a punk rocker and i love that song 2 but i think the best one is hey remus =)

I can’t believe I misspelled Ginny, (I purposly typed wrocker) I don’t know where my mind is.

@Patrick: I just assumed that since you say “pin” for “pen” and “tin” for “ten”, you were confused. 😛

” I Want You to Whomp Me” by Lauren Fairweather is probably my favorite since I adore the original song, but “We’re the Students at Hogwarts” is a close second.

Dunno if it counts but 12 Days Of Wizard Christmas by Gred and Forge makes me happy. I’m a sucker for all thing Christmas.
Twelve more ugly sweaters, eleven shrunken elf heads, ten bat bogey hexes, nine nosebleed nougats, eight out-dated dress robes, seven stolen cauldrons, six signed portraits, FIVE GOLDEN SNITCHES! Four flobberworms, three vulture hats, two homework helpers and a lecture all about the Ministry!

  28. Patrick Avatar

Ooh.. I forgot about ”I Want You to Whomp Me”. I listened to that for like a week straight… it makes me giggle like the little school girl that I am.

Why must you hurt me, Freya? *single tear down cheek*

Smells Like Harry Potter is interesting because Harry Year 4 starts to sound like… well, someone else. And I like the guitar solo. I heard it in the recording of a 2008 HATP show in Seattle that’s in the Internet Archive. http://bit.ly/2m39HX

It’s kind of weird… but if you’ve seen The Remus Lupins this summer, you’ve heard them work “Karma Police” by Radiohead into their song “The Order”. It’s amazing.

There’s a cute wrock band I like called Philospherock that just does parody songs. They’ve got a few really good ones. My favorite is “The Real Mad-Eye Moody”, their parody of Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady.” It’s hilarious!

Wow, there are a lot of good suggestions here. A lot of which I haven’t heard (of), one of which I didn’t even know was a filk (“Ginny is a Punk Rocker”), and I couple I love.

99 Death Eaters has always been my favourite filk (by a wrock band), or at least the first and practically only that comes to mind, but kudos to whoever said “Hey Remus”. I heard that once on the Willows’ site, and literally laughed my ass off! Literally!! That’s big for me. Haven’t heard it for ages, but I’d love love love to now!

Also wouldn’t mind hearing “The Real Mad-Eye Moody”, “12 Days of Wizard Christmas” and “I want you to Whomp me” now, too.

In case you’re wondering, my favourite non-wrock filk is off Snapecast. Its the one that’s a filk of the Billy Joel song “Always a Woman to Me”. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say the word they used in Snapecast (although I don’t consider it too bad), but its the end of Episode 26.

I don’t think I have to say who its about.

Wait, “We’re the Students at Hogwarts” is a cover/parody??? I totally thought Jace wrote that from scratch…clearly, I haven’t been paying adequate attention to liner notes.

And having now gone and looked up the original, I have to say I like Jace’s version much better. With the exception that occasional injection of disharmonic strings at the very beginning of the original version was pretty darn cool, I have to say, I like Jace’s arrangement much better over all. It has much more energy and drive to it.

This is definitely my favourite filk/parody in wrock, now that I know it is one. It was already one of my favourite wrock songs to begin with.
