Hogwarts Class of ’84

After summer tours and Azkatraz, it may seem like a long way to Wrockstock in November. You know what we could use in the meantime? A wizard rock show, and not just any old show. Let’s party like it’s…1984?

Well, we’re in luck. On August 29th, the Doubletree Guest Suites in Cincinnati will play host to Ministry of Magic, The Remus Lupins, and Tonks and the Aurors, along with wizard rock fans all decked out in their finest 80’s gear. I got the chance to talk to Lewis, one of the organizers, about putting the whole thing together.

The show was partially inspired by the fact that Ministry of Magic has never played a show in Ohio before. Lewis knew she wanted them, but in February she also saw Tonks and the Aurors play for the first time. Apparently, Steph made quite the impression . “I went home the next day and emailed her to ask her to play at the show,” she told me. After Hallows and Horcruxes 2, she was sold on the idea of The Remus Lupins as well. “I think all three of our bands put on fantastic shows, and it’s a great combination! Not to mention they all have the ability to rock the house, 80’s style!”

And yes, the show is 80’s themed. Lewis wanted something different and discovered that Ministry of Magic loved 80’s music as she did. While 80’s dress is not mandatory, as she put it, “dressing up is half the fun!! I know I will be fully decked out head to toe in 80’s wear. Clothes, hair, makeup, everything!” Personally, I’m going to try to find my old crimper. She also promises lots of 80’s fun throughout the night, in addition to the dance party following the show.

Lewis enlisted the help of her friend, Jenna, and the two of them sought out the perfect venue, which they seem to have found. The hotel has a ballroom for the event and all the out-of-towners can easily stay there for the night. “What really blew our minds was how awesome the guest rooms are. Every room in the hotel is a two-room suite…every room has a microwave, a fridge and a minibar, an iPod dock, two TVs and all sorts of other cool stuff.”

In true wizard rock style, the show is a fundraiser. Lewis and Jenna picked First Book as the beneficiary, an obvious choice to tie in their love of reading in general and Harry Potter in particular.

Check out the MySpace page to buy tickets, book a room, or get your tshirts! The last day to book a room is July 30th, unless the block sells out earlier, and tickets and tshirts will only be sold until August 15th. Questions?
