Question Tuesday!

In my post-LeakyCon daze, I have decided to turn this Question Tuesday into an opportunity for us to visualize an ideal situation in Wizard Rock. So here it is:

If you were organizing a Wizard Rock event and had a $1 million budget, what would you do (other than fly out as many people as possible. That’s just assumed.)

Personally, I would find a relatively remote location that is still easily accessible and set up something like a giant circus tent for us to wrock out in. There might be cabins and tents and bonfires involved as well. It would be a week-long event where we can come and go as necessary in case people can only be in attendance for a few of the days. There would be constant barbecues and Wrockers every 5 feet playing and just hanging out with the people they love and don’t get to see nearly often enough!

I would plan a concert with at least 20 bands and have an all day concert. I would take the rest of the money to pay for everyone to be able to come, since the biggest reason people miss big shows is that they cannot afford it!

I would take control of and entire cruise boat for a week. The only people would be the Wizard Rockers and fans then the boat staff. All the food and drinks would be paid for. One destination would be a pretty private island for a huge Wizard Rock beach party.

Just all the people you love for a week on the ocean.

Living in Colorado, this thought has actually occured to me a few times, and I already knew the answer when I read the tweet! I want to plan a wizrock convention at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO. Seriously, this place is gorgeous, and slightly isolated from the craziness of a big city, but there is still plenty to do nearby. The Stanley is filled with history (and ghosts!) and they have multiple buildings that we could rent out and block off for just wizards. I would want to reserve the main building for the guests, then the Manor House for the workers and the wrockers. We could use the Concert Hall for the shows, and have smaller meet ups in the music room and billards room of the main building, and have meals in the McGreggor Room (their big dining hall). We’d also have tours of the hotel and we’d do a late-night ghost “hunt” for people really into the haunted history of the place.

It would probably only last for a long weekend, because too much of a good thing and all that. 🙂

Wow. 1 Million is plenty overkill =)

Honestly, based on my experiences with the NYCWRF and the costs involved. The money could be spent on Pyrotechnics and such.

It could easily be a multi-day event, with way over 20 bands, and you could easily afford to fly pretty much all the oversea’s bands over as well.

You could get jumbo screens, professional HD quality video recording as well as audio recording.

And you can cap it all off with an improperly sized tiny foam hogwarts floating down on the stage with little people dressed as house elves jumping around.

Heck, for 1 Million you can even have a blimp with a camera recording the event.

Hey, i’m right with @Caitie. I would have a wizard rock fanclub online which people could sign up for and there would definitely be access to free tickets and for a few lucky groups, some free travel. However, I would also fly in the coolest wrock bands from all over the world and make it a giant event that people would never forget.

  6. Jonathon Rosenthal Avatar

oh, and Alex could set like a dozen guitars on fire.

I agree with you on most of that stuff, except the pyro. It’s usually not worth the costs and headache.

So, I’d do all that stuff, except substitute the pyro and blimp for a super-sweet lighting rig with loads of fun stuff like Mac 700s (my new favorite toys) and an LED curtain.

    That would be wicked awesome.

  8. Dinahsaur Avatar

@Jonathon You’re amazing and freaking crack me up. I’d buy Alex a dozen guitars to light on fire and find a way to ensure they go up blazing.

I would book the best venue ever: J. K. Rowling’s back yard. We’d be there for a week, any band who wanted to would be able to play, and we’d spend all the money on flying everyone in and putting them up, since I’m pretty sure Jo might object to housing everyone.

Venue would be key. I’m wavering between renting a whole castle and setting up performance spaces in different rooms and halls that can be traversed between, or something like Wembley or Madison Square Garden.

  11. Freya Avatar

We could totally buy the wizard rock island for a million dollars. And then no one ever has to leave.
(Sorry that I abandoned y’all for Question Tuesday! Coherent sentences are still difficult.)

  12. Lori Avatar

I would give Newfoundland it’s first real ever Wrock show, rent out Mile One and fly everyone in to see it!

Hahaha, oh yes, my originality is overwhelming XD

I would have multiple venues–a few in the USA, one in Great Britain, one in Australia, a couple in Europe–which would cover just about all the places that support wizard rock. Every wizard rock band who was interested would be invited to perform at the venue of their choice. There would be synchronized performances broadcast by satellite to the other venues and also to worldwide TV so that everyone has an opportunity to see each performer. The show would go on until every band has performed and then made into a DVD.

I’d bring everyone to the UK for a mega-wrock festival. It would be great to finally see all the bands from around the world in one place – and for it to be somewhere that I could actually reach without it costing over a month’s salary to get to!

  15. Kathleen Avatar

Woo! Tracy that sounds awesome. Huge wrock show at a castle somewhere in the UK! We can have a huge stage outside (under something though? I hear weather can be a bit dreary there) and then all stay in the castle.

  16. Julia Avatar

Am I the only one who thinks that if we had a million dollars we would NEED to have the show in Jo Rowling’s back yard?

  17. Jess Avatar

I would rent a cruise ship all decked out in Potter everything. It would travel to every major city boarding an ocean and we’d just pick up fans as we go. We’d wrock out 24/7 an itd be awesome.

  18. OliviaElaine Avatar

    Warped Tour the Wrock Edition…

    It would go EVERYWHERE

  19. Russ Avatar

Wait a minute…. where did this $1M come from? Did someone save Brooke Shields from drowning or something? Also, if I had $1M, can I opt out of a show and instead maybe buy you a monkey? I bet you’ve always wanted a monkey! Or maybe some art… like a Picasso or a Garfunkel?

  20. Dinahsaur Avatar

I love the idea of JKR’s backyard, but the problem is she doesn’t need money. We’d need to convince her to let it happen of our own accord.

It was actually my first thought. XD

And Russ……… I love you. You’re freaking hilarious!

Russ – “Fast Times” FTW!!! 🙂

I think we could all go to Australia and have a month long concert, one band per night. Free food & drinks all month long.

Purchase a massive 150 acre island like Eagle’s Nest Island in Tennessee for less than half a million. Purchase a large hall for inside performances, some gazebo’s for outside performances and many small one/two bedroom homes for fans and wrockers to live in. Buy a boat for transport to and from the island, across the small river that links the island to the mainland.

J.K. would so let us have her back yard if we gave the million dollars to charity!

I like the idea of Wrock shows all over the place too…

I agree with Tracy. International shows are just too expensive! 🙁

This is easy. I would take over one of my areas public libraries and have the shown outside on the lawns or inside if it rains. Then we could camp out at night (not sleeping till breakfast of course) with bonfire made from smashed guitars. We would have butterbeer and pumpkin juice and Bertie beans and chocolate frogs and barbecues and everything. I’d have donations open for my county’s library system because we get basically no funding and have been in wars with the town council for the past eight or nine years about taxes and I want to increase the popularity of public libraries. So Alex could light as many guitars on fire as he wants because I want to annoy the town supervisor. lol
I would probably have it last a week or so and there would also be workshops on song writing and producing and stuff.
I wish I could actually do this though.

Freya, I second the buying a island thing and just setting up a village where the fandom can just live. I’d be happy there.

It should be in the UK at a location as close to where Hogwarts would be. Since I’m in total fantasy mode, it will be outdoors (by a lake!) the weather will be perfect and the fans will sit on picnic blankets. Since the venue will be almost free, the million will be spent on the charter flights from all over to get to London and the train from Kings Cross to the show site.

PS I like the castle, and the island and the multi-destination shows too.

@Julia I think that JKR’s backyard would be awesome, but I don’t think that paying her for it would be the key.

I think that we should buy an island. We spend the first million outfitting it and then we can use it as a concert gathering for the rest of time. Not to mention it would be the best place to live EVER!

Welcome to the Island of Awesome!

  29. Stine Avatar

I second what others have already said; we should finally get together and buy the Island of Awesome that people have been talking about for at least as long as I’ve been in the wizard rock community. The island would of course have unlimited accommodation, and several big and small venues for parties and wizard rock performances. And, as someone pointed out, an abundance of guitars for Alex to set on fire…

  30. Dreaner Avatar

I would hire Stockholm City Hall’s Blue Hall. And set up a stage there. I don’t think nothing could beat wrocking out at the place where the nobel prize banquet is hold. This maybe around the time when J.K. Rowling wins the award. Every wrocker and every fan flown into Sweden and just ready to rock.
It would be the chance to meet everyone I’m surely never gonna meet unless there is a miracle like this.

  31. Michèle Avatar

One Million? Easy, we buy the freaking Trout Lodge in Potosi (Where Wrockstock is held) and start our Wizard Commune. The shows will happend by themselves there I’m sure.

  32. James Avatar

Ok so i would totally buy a few like 10 tour busses and get lots of the bands to tour together. And full on media blitz!!! Lets get more fans so we can have more awesome people and friends in the fandom. Also you’d all HAVE to tour the UK! Again full on media blitz with the final show at Wrock The Loch.

I would have a proper stage and stuff, and all the lighting and my could be band, and the parselmouths, the moaning myrtles and all the other wrock bands! It must be in england.
