A Sisterhood of Wrock

Today marks the second annual Universal Harry Potter Day, and what better way to celebrate it than to join in the festivities of the inaugural concert of the Witch Rock series? Stacy of Swish and Flick has organized several events throughout the spring featuring mostly female wrock bands starting off with an event this Saturday, February 21st, and continuing on to May 20th with a pre-LeakyCon concert.

Why female wrock bands? Stacy informed me that her intention is not necessarily to simply promote female wizard rock bands, but to form a community of women supporting other women in their creative endeavors through wizard rock, as well as helping them grow musically. A “sisterhood” of wrockers, if you will. Since most of the wizard rock bands that come through New York City tend to be males, she saw this as an opportunity to help female bands in the wrock community showcase their talents on a somewhat larger platform.

Even though on the surface it may seem that male bands tend to be more popular in the wizard rock community, it is not due to some sort of “gender barrier” that has been set up within the community. Any band, whether big or small, male or female, can have a significant influence on wizard rock. “The only reason why the more ‘popular’ wrock bands are male is because they are able to tour and promote. Female wizard rockers can tour and promote just as well as the males can, but we tend to have other commitments that keep us from doing so: school, family, work. It has little to do with gender – it just sort of ended up that way.”

As of now, there are a few scheduled events including bands such as Astoria Malfoy, The Butterbeer Experience, Celestial Warmbottom, DJ Luna Lovegood, Fred and George The Band, Hawthorn and Holly, The House of Black, Madame Pince and the Librarians, Nagini, Snidget, Swish and Flick, Tonks and the Aurors, and Witherwings. There is still room for more bands to join in on the Witch Rock series. Any bands that are interested can contact Stacy of Swish and Flick or Tina of DJ Luna Lovegood.

Stacy is going to attempt “(and I stress ATTEMPT)” to broadcast the show on Saturday live on blogTV. The channel is SwishandFlick. Tune in around 7 p.m. Eastern time to catch some live wizard rock!
