2008 WRPCA Winners Announced!

I am very excited and relieved to present to you the winners of this year’s Wizard Rock People’s Choice Awards. Hundreds of people voted for nearly as many bands, making the nominations wildly diverse. Some winners may surprise you while others may not. In any case, the people have spoken!

Click here to see the results for yourself.

Thank you all who participated. Next year we will be broadening the categories and hopefully making the process simpler. Also, we know that a lot of you would like to know who ended up being nominated in each category. An in-depth report and editorial will be published soon. Please check back for updates!

  9. DJ Rae Carson Avatar

The Whomping Willow is NOT a magical creature! It’s a plant! >.>

  10. Lizz Avatar

To me, it’s sentient, alive, and not human. Therefore, magical creature.

  11. DJ Rae Carson Avatar

But if you follow that argument, any inanimate object that has been transformed into being “alive” could also be a magical creature. Does Hagrid teach about Whomping Willows in Care of Magical Creature class? Nope.

  12. Zoe (Split Seven Ways etc) Avatar

seconding the tree ? creature comment. What next, getting Hagrid to look after the Mandrakes? But enough of my Slytherclaw pickiness. Huge congratulations to everyone 🙂

The tree IS alive from the beginning, as a tree. Matthew did suggest voting for someone else, but the majority of people nominated him anyway. Two years in a row.

  15. Gred and Forge Avatar
    Gred and Forge

Matt has done so much for wizard rock, and not just with his music.
Lena has an amazing voice and too much talent.
Alex is just Alex. Which is awesome.

I’m so happy for everyone, great choices this year!

  16. Lizz Avatar

    Concord,

Everyone believes that whoever they voted for should have won. We’re all entitled to our opinions, and everyone expressed them in their votes.

  17. Danny Avatar

    *reads results*
    Seems about right 🙂

Go everyone who won, and everyone who had to count to see who won.

  18. Chris Avatar

The fact that a majority of people voted for The Whomping Willows means that a majority of people feel that the Willow IS a magical creature.

In addition, the dictionary definition of “creature” includes any being that had been “created”. (ala Frakenstein’s Monster) It is a point of canon fact that the Whomping Willow was created. Therefore, it qualifies.

  19. DJ Rae Carson Avatar

The vast majority of people also voted for Saddam Hussein to be President of Iraq. But that’s obviously another story. =P

Point being, it was never my intention to start a comments war–sorry if it appeared that way. All I wished to do was make a point.

  20. ctb Avatar

    Hey!
A lot of what I voted for won!
I guess a lot of us think a like…either that or I’m just very unoriginal.

  21. Chris Avatar

While I appreciate not intending to start a thing…. are you implying that the voting is somehow rigged?

Because I assure its not since i just spent every waking moment of my weekend doing nothing but counting votes. I have the tally sheets still sitting directly in front of me, and I can tell you that there was a lot of very interesting competitions going on, which Lizz is planning on writing about later.

Or maybe you’re just trying to compare a good man who has done a lot for this community to an evil murdering dictator?

    …?

  22. Danny Avatar

    Oh that’s a burn!

  23. Russ Avatar

Congrats to all the winners, all of whom are very deserving and proudly represent wrock.

And, I think more importantly, congrats to everyone who took the time to send in the emails and express their love and support for anyone and everyone who received votes.

Oh and thanks to Lizz, Chris, and everyone else involved for doing some minor stuff, a few things here and there that took up a few minutes, and whatnot 😉 It’s appreciated more than you know.

  24. DJ Rae Carson Avatar

The last thing I’ll mention on this comment board I never wished to accuse Matt Maggiacomo of rigging anything. In fact, it was the furthest thing from my mind.

  25. Danny Avatar

On this weeks episode of Wizrocklopedia, controversy ensues and drama is guilty by association:

“How could you possibly think something like that?”
“I don’t know, Janene, how could you possibly say something like that”

Don’t miss it. Tonight at 8pm Eastern/7pm Central!

    Only on Fox!

  26. Chris Avatar

The competition really was pretty epic in a lot of categories. Some of the winners only won by a point or two. Out of 300+ ballots it was AMAZING to watch the epicness evolve, lol.

For those that watch the Wizrockateers you’ll get a sneak peek at the tally sheets, lol. Though i might talk more about it on my personal channel in another video thanks to my punishment. 😛

  27. Camie Avatar

hahahahahaha…. i thought we did it this way to escape the drama… looks like we ended up with some anyways…

  28. Danny Avatar

You can never escape the drama. It’s kinda like the rhythm; it’s going to get you.

    I’m a nerd 🙂

  29. Haley Avatar

hahahhaha if anyone suggests that voting is rigged, I will flip out. I will rip microsoft excel off my dock and throw it at you dramatically. oh yes I will.

  30. Lizz Avatar

Am I suddenly at a wedding reception? Hahahaha.

    *dances*

  31. Russ Avatar

Dude, did you totally just quote Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine????

    Nice.

  32. Denni Avatar

Congrats to all the winners and people who did not win, all these awards go to every band out there!!!! We all make this community what it is! Great Job everyone, and thank you Wizrocklopedia for all your hard work, trust me I know how overwhelming and consuming it is, and I failed at my attempt (Wizard Rock Awards) which is why I appreciate yours so much more!

  33. Haley Avatar

    I’ll dance with you, Lizz!

  34. Danny Avatar

Man, I quote GE & MSM like constantly. I should probably be put away for it, really.

    Padded cell here I come!

  35. Whompy Avatar

I really loved Saddam’s performance in the South Park movie. Otherwise, I have no connection to him whatsoever. I swear.

Last year, I made the same argument that I should not be eligible for the Magical Creature award, and I attempted to deflect the award to the Hungarian Horntails (because Darius himself is the most badass magical creature I’ve ever encountered). Everyone disagreed with me. What can I say? My hands are tied.

THANK YOU. To everyone. I am honored beyond belief. I’m also very glad that The Remus Lupins won Band of the Year. I’ve spent so much time touring with Alex and seeing how hard he works, and how much heart he puts into his music. He is my WRBFF.

Well if you want to avoid the Saddama-drama next year, you oughta try see if they’ll put a note : “The Whomping Willow is a PLANT, not a CREATURE” on the ballot next year…Someone will still probably vote for you though.

big congrats to everyone, i can’t wait to see the runner ups.

  38. Dawlish Avatar

I got Lifetime Achievement and Band of the Year, two of the biggies, correct. I voted for the Shrieking Shack Disco Gang for a lot of stuff, like new band, international band, and best punk song. I also voted for Draco and Harry for best song overall. Really, I mostly got the right people, but in different places.

    Congrats to everyone!

I have a suggestion to make. Before next year’s voting, I think that there should be some kind of listening fair of some sort. This would be a chance for bands to send in songs/artwork that they want to be considered for a category. Then this way, people can see/hear/look at a myriad of bands that they may not have heard about before making their selection of choice. Again…just a suggestion, and I understand that it might be difficult to pull off, but I think it would make the whole voting thing a bit more fair to people who may not know about some wonderful bands out there, that if they had known about them, they might have voted for them instead. Sorry if that didn’t make much sense, I did my best…

Brilliant! Congratulations to all the awesome bands out there. (The minute I saw Oliver Bloyd and the Remembralls under Best Male Vocals, I’m pretty sure my whole family heard me scream ‘Yes!’ and slam my fist onto my desk. I’m still smiling.) Congrats, again, everyone!

Yay! Congrats to all the winners! I’m so glad Matt won the Lifetime Achievement Award. I think giving up your job to pursue your passion deserves said award. Thanks to the Wizrocklopedia for working so hard to get all this together!

  43. Lizz Avatar

    Pepper,

We do recommend on the voting form to investigate other bands if you aren’t familiar with the whole of the scene. While our Band Listings are large and a lot to go through for someone who is new to it, we do have every band listed on that page, although not by genre. We are working on something that should make sorting by genre easier, but the vastness of the community makes it difficult especially when considering so many bands have music in more than one genre.

The entry forms were much more diverse than last year. A lot of people keep track of new bands these days and I hope that we’ve helped that 🙂

The Weasel King got SNUBBED! That’s kind of disappointing D:

But CONGRATS TO EVERYBODY, these results are sooo good! Especially congrats to Matt for the Lifetime Achievement Award, he deserves it so much!

It was sooo close. He was nominated a ridiculous amount, seriously.

COOL! Congratz to all you winners! I LOVE YOU ALL! And it’s amazing that you guys counted up all those votes, i could never do that! i’d die of sheer exhaustion and boredom! 😀 I got almost all of them right, expect for the ones i didn’t fill in (sorry about that if it pissed you off or something) but yeah, I’m so happy I was a Teenage Werewolf won as the best full length cd, because that’s the only wizard rock cd i have heard in its entirety (i usually just download a couple of songs off of iTunes) … ok enough of me going on about nothing, I’m starting to sound like a WRock Club Podcast (kidding!) peace out, and stay awesome!

  47. Lizz Avatar

Actually, I would rather someone leave a category blank than nominate someone for something in a category they don’t know the competition for.

my mouth dropped with some of the catagories i thought for sure would be no contest for some. i think i like the idea of nominations first so that people are forced to see what else there is rather then just going with the only band they know of that fits the catagory.

  50. Bruce/.Mirror of Erised Avatar

Congrats to everyone – recipients, everyone nominated and given favorable mention! Whoohoo!! Keep wrockin in 2008!! 🙂
