Flashback Friday – Phoenix Rising

Last night on Twitter, Doug MacDonald (aka Catchlove) noted that it had been 6 years since the Phoenix Rising conference held in New Orleans, LA.

May 2007 was a momentous time – wizard rock was growing quickly, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows was 2 months away from being published, as was the release of the Order of the Phoenix movie. That summer and fall would see an explosion in new wrock bands, and the launching of an all wizard rock con, the glorious Wrockstock! And it was Phoenix Rising that gave Abby Hupp the idea to hold a con just for wizard rock bands and fans.

Oh, and MTV was there too.

Here’s some videos from the fans and bands that attended and played at Phoenix Rising. If you were there, give us some of your favorite memories in the comments below!

This was a game changer for me. Storyville was my very first Wizard Rock show, the impact of which was immediate. After it was over I spent the next month listening to nothing but the four albums I’d bought that night and wearing my shiny new “I’m Going Looking for Trouble” t-shirt as often as I felt like doing laundry. It was the first time music really managed to knock me off my ass. Plus it was the night I stole my first set list. In case anyone is wondering, it was from Alex’s set.
